This Waikanae property presented multiple challenges with its narrow, steep site and extremely limited access. The existing outdoor spaces included disconnected deck and patio areas with no practical way to move between them, significantly limiting the usability of the outdoor living spaces.
KHHS designed and implemented a comprehensive solution that transformed this challenging hillside into a functional, connected outdoor living environment:
- Created a series of CMA treated pine sleeper retaining walls to manage the steep terrain
- Installed custom stairs with exposed aggregate concrete treads for durability and visual appeal
- Extended the existing deck to increase usable outdoor living space
- Added integrated deck lighting to improve safety and extend usability into evening hours
- Constructed additional seating areas on the existing patio to enhance entertainment options
- Ensured all new elements blended seamlessly with existing structures
Despite the significant access limitations and steep terrain, our team successfully connected all outdoor living areas while enhancing both safety and aesthetics. The completed project delivered a cohesive outdoor space that flows naturally between levels, allowing the homeowners to fully utilize their property’s potential for the first time.
The combination of quality materials and thoughtful design ensured a result that is not only functional and stylish but also built to withstand Kapiti’s coastal conditions for years to come.
